While others were in their bunkers I took this picture of the POL dump which was hit by an artillery round and was on fire. The rounds were hitting near the buildings and around the ammo dump.

Picking up Battalion mail from the Post Office. Unidentified Marine was on light duty due to the cast on his foot.

During the first week of October one of the biggest disasters to hit the BAS was about to occur. We were getting low on beer. The Chief went into a panic. He got on the phone and called Da Nang and after a few hours he had a plan. He was going to send myself and HN Steve ROZZI down to Da Nang after Plague vaccine. We were to spend 3 days at China Beach on in country R&R. While there, we were to purchase and make arrangements for shipping a pallet (144 cases) of beer back to Dong Ha. Since that quantity of beer required the authorization of an officer, the Chief presented me with a document which gave me authority to buy the beer. He also gave me a set of instructions on who to contact to make the arrangements. We had a beer fund. Each time we took a beer from the fridge we put 10 cents into the kitty. A pallet of beer would yield $345.60 so there was more than enough money to purchase another pallet. I never did inquire as to what the extra money was being spent on since the Chief was in charge of the fund.
