One of the biggest problems we encountered during that time was falciparum malaria, which was transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito. From June through August a large number of Marines started having symptoms of jaundice and spiking high fevers. To lower their fevers we had to cool them down. Stretchers were placed in the water by the bridge.  The patient was put on the stretcher with only their face above the surface of the water. We med evaced them out several times a day. Even though we took malaria pills (chloriquin premaquin), it was not effective against this particular strain of malaria (nothing was).

Bridge on the stream by the shower units. The pool under the bridge was where we cooled our malaria patients while waiting for medevac to arrive.
