We blended in with the jungle fairly well. At that time Marine infantry did not use grease paint as camouflage. That luxury was usually limited to use by the Recon units.

On Patrol traveling west on Highway 9 between the turn off to the Punch Bowl and Payable.

On the left is a Montagnard work party cutting elephant grass. The Montagnards had been employed to build a chow hall at Payable. The elephant grass was used to thatch the roof. The truck, a six-by, was used for transport to and from Payable.

The marine in the foreground on this patrol is Cpl. "LBJ" Leslie B. JOHNSON from Kentucky, one of 2d platoon's squad leaders.

2d Squad returning from patrol entering Payable on Highway 9 from the east. Bunkers on both sides of the road provide defense for the position as well as tanks and Ontos. Note how we are walking spread widely apart and staggered on both sides of the road. This is done purposefully to help reduce casualties if we were hit by incoming enemy fire. Marine on the right is Cpl. "L.B.J."
