We
were getting ready to go out on a night ambush. We took small arms fire
from one of the peaks to the north. During this fire fight I remember that
one of the grunts was more concerned about his "rubber lady" (air
mattress) getting hit than himself. He did not want to sleep on the bare
rocks again.

This photo looks north
toward Mutter's Ridge and the DMZ. While on the Razorback we lived on the
southern tip. Our patrols and ambushes occurred daily on the areas to the
north.

The
next day we patrolled the area where the shooters had been located. It took
us several hours to climb up there. We arrived sometime after noon and
spent the next hour or so looking for spent shell casings and other clues.
We found nothing. Several days later we returned to the Punchbowl.

Shortly
after coming down from the Razorback, Lima Company was relocated to
Payable, and I was reassigned to 2nd platoon. Conditions at Payable were much
improved over those we were used to living in. Our patrols and ambushes
were now performed on the south side of the Trin
Hin River. We still lived in dirt and sandbagged bunkers, but there were
hot showers always available. There was no luxury compared to standing in a
hot shower after sitting on a cold night ambush.
