Company Lima security element positioned at the river block at (AT 971699) reported receiving thirty
rounds of small arms fire and one 60mm mortar round (landed in river) from
Viet Cong positioned at (AT 979693). The Marines directed small arms fire
at the enemy position and observed one Viet Cong fall as if struck by the
Marines’ fire. Because of their mission the Marines were unable to pursue
the enemy. One Viet Cong KIA (possible) and no Marine casualties were
reported.

Mission: No change in
basic mission; 3d Battalion 3d Marines assumes responsibility for day and
night security of all Pacification Teams operating in assigned TAOR
Concept of
operation:
Units of 3d Battalion 3d Marines relieve one another within assigned TAOR
during period 23-27 December. Company India relieved Company Mike at ASP#1,
and provides one platoon to Battalion CP. Company Kilo assumes pacification
mission in CAM NE (4), (5), and (3) and in LA BONG (3), YEN NE (4), LA BONG (1), and in village t (AT
967676). Company Lima relieves Company Kilo in western sector of Battalion
TAOR. Company Mike relieves Company India in AN TRACH (1).
Company Lima: On 23
December, truck lift one platoon (rein) to Hill 22
during morning as relief for Company Kilo. On 25 December helilift one
platoon to Hill 22 at 1300H as relief for Company Kilo. Assume OPCON of one
platoon (rein) of Company Kilo at new location until 26 December. Provide
minimum security force of one squad (rein) each for LA CHAU (2) and river
position at (AT 962660). Assume responsibility for new TAOR on 23 December.
Report when responsibility is assumed. Company Lima is responsible for SONG
YEN in 3d Battalion 3d Marines TAOR.
Coordinating
instructions: Submit overlays of defensive positions and
fire support plans prior to 1800 of the day on which responsibility for
assigned sector of TAOR is assumed. Submit a schematic showing location of
tactical and protective wire, mines and/or claymores emplaced, crew served
weapons positions, primary and alternate armored vehicle positions, and
bunker positions. Barrage and concentrations will be registered upon
coordination and approval of this headquarters. Mines and claymores
emplaced must be covered by observation and fire at all times.
